With the budding of tree and shrub species in the forest, active harmful activity of insects of the early spring phenological complex begins, which consists in damaging leaves, promoting the development of an infectious disease – oak powdery mildew, and sometimes – with prolonged, over several years, defoliation – and reducing tree growth. The most common representatives of this group are green oak and hawthorn leafhoppers, leaf-eating beetles, winter leafhoppers, etc.
To prevent damage to plantations by these pests, it is necessary to systematically and timely monitor the emergence of foci of leaf-eating pests and implement a set of measures aimed at increasing the stability of plantations. In order to constantly biologically control the number of harmful insects, it is necessary to create favorable conditions for attracting birds and beneficial entomofauna. Therefore, the State Forestry Enterprise “Kharkivlisozahist” together with the forest guards of state forestry enterprises has begun work on monitoring leaf-eating pests in deciduous plantations of the Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
