Biosecurity for Hunting Farms

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course examines biosafety for hunting grounds in Ukraine, using African Swine Fever (ASF) as a primary case study.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a severe viral disease affecting pigs, causing significant economic losses and threatening food security. The persistence of ASF within wildlife populations highlights the critical need for effective measures to prevent its spread and protect domestic pig populations.

Strategy for Combatting ASF

International experience shows that managing ASF in wild boar requires a logical sequence of actions:

  1. Halt the epidemic wave to prevent further geographical spread of the virus.
  2. Promote natural virus lethality, allowing the epidemic to drastically reduce the density of the infected population.
  3. Reduce the residual population once the virus has caused a population collapse, preventing rapid recovery.

Purpose and Audience

To address these challenges, this biosafety training course provides hunting ground users, forestry and hunting industry workers, and veterinary services with the necessary knowledge and practical tools to improve biosecurity.

This interactive training promotes the implementation of best practices for ASF surveillance and control, ensuring a coordinated and effective response to the disease.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of ASF, ensuring community awareness and compliance;
  • Develop disease eradication strategies;
  • Identify transmission risks and conduct carcass disposal in accordance with biosafety requirements;
  • Communicate effectively, raising awareness and fostering cooperation between hunters, veterinarians, and local communities.

The course includes videos, text materials, and practical tools. Training concludes with a final test to obtain a certificate of completion.
